Hello Team! This is Ryan and Amber. In efforts to be totally prepared and ready to go this summer, we will be meeting weekly. Lucky for you, we will even give homework assignments so we can all be prepared for this summer. So, here we go. (Drum roll, please).
To-Do This Week:
1. Complete the online training. It can be found at this website: http://ce.byu.edu/yp/employment/eTraining.cfm
2. Read your EFY Handbook (Just the Participant portion).
3. Read this article: Click here. Oh, and we would LOVE it if you would comment on this blog after your completion. This will give us a good opportunity to learn from each other before we begin the summer! This week, you will be receiving an email inviting you to become an Author to our new blog byugreenteam.blogspot.com.
4. Oh, and, please send byugreenteam@gmail.com an email including "10 Random Facts People Working with me for 56 Days Should Know."
We realize that this is a TON and that for some odd reason, you have more going on in your lives besides EFY. We are excited!!! Thanks for all you are doing already!
Please don't hesitate to shoot us an email with any questions.
We love ya'll,
Ryan and Amber

I love love love this talk. Eric and Jill also assigned us to read this last summer. I am glad I was assigned to read it again. the part that really touched me the most was when Pres Kimball sai, "Jesus was a listening leader. Because he loved others with a perfect love, he listened without being condescending. A great leader listens not only to others, but also to his conscience and to the promptings of God. "
ReplyDeleteSo often I forget that I must need to 'seek to understand' before I 'seek to be understood'. Especailly when helping counselors to understand their youth. More often then not, they just need someone to talk to/or complain to. They may not ALWAYS need words of guidance, put they ALWAYS need a listening ear.
I loved reading this talk. It answered a lot of questions I had. I specifically liked when Pres. Kimball said, "Jesus knew who he was and why he was here on this planet. That meant he could lead from strength rather than from uncertainty or weakness." I think as it is getting closer to EFY, I have felt more inadequate. This helped me to realize that I need to remember who I am and that the Lord trusted me enough to serve and build those that "God has given us to love and to serve." With that being said, I need to focus on improving myself so that I might be able to progress and learn and then be an example. "We are not yet perfect as Jesus was, but unless those about us can see us striving and improving, they will not be able to look to us for example, and they will see us as less than fully serious about the things to be done...There are many individuals waiting to be touched and loved if we care enough to improve in our performance."
ReplyDeleteOne thing that suck out to me in particular is that we are counseled to be persuasive, and not manipulative. This is most effective when, as President Kimball said about Christ. "Christ said, 'Do what I do.' not "do what I say'." That's the key. We have to live what we teach. Often enough, it seems that we undulate in our spiritual activity. Not anything seriously affecting our salvation, but certainly detrimental to our spiritual sensitivity. Things like the sincerity of our prayers and our capacity to recieve revelation. Things like losing sight of patience and swapping persuasion for manipulation. Things like confusing the important with the trivial. Things like getting caught up in presenting facts, and less time testifying of the facts. As we really seek to remain close to the Lord, and direct other people to him as we follow him, we really will be able come much closer to reaching the full potential that God can use us for this summer. The spirit will make up for the ground that we lack. I love this quote from Neal A. Maxwell: "God does not begin by asking us about our ability. He asks us about our AVAILability. If then we prove out DEPENDability, the Lord will increase our CAPability."
ReplyDeleteThat really stuck out to me too Josh. I love that.
ReplyDeleteI also love this, "Jesus operated from a base of fixed principles or truths rather than making up the rules as he went along. Thus, his leadership style was not only correct, but also constant. ... Those who cling to power at the expense of principle often end up doing almost anything to perpetuate their power."
If we, in our lives and this summer, can really do this--have correct and constant rules, we will make it. We can't get power hungry. We need to stay away from trying to "impress" others with our power or spirituality. If we truly want to be like the Lord we need to gain a testimony of the doctrines and seek to teach others. Not manipulating them to have our thoughts, but showing them how we really understand the doctrine by how we teach and most importantly how we live. I've definitely noticed lately that the youth and our counselors (and us) need consistency. When things are consistent, we have more time to focus on what is being taught/communicated instead of the mundane logistical things. Awesome talk. Thanks for your comments.
I really enjoyed this talk becuase he truly was the master teacher. I really love how Jesus teaches by follow what I do and not follow what I say. I think it makes I huge difference in peoples lives when they see their leaders practicing what they preach and not just preaching. There is a lot we can learn from the Master. unfortunately we will not be able to learn everything. But, Might as well try, Right?
ReplyDeletewow, i am so excited to work with all of you. Liese, I think we ALL feel inadequate. Last summer, my feelings of inadequacy got in the way sometimes. I know that i still feel inadequate but the "Dependability" on the Lord that Shaun was talking about is what makes up for my weaknesses.
ReplyDeletei am so excited for this summer.
